Kara McKinley Kunst is a fiber artist, writer, and the creator of The Knit McKinley, where she publishes original knitting patterns and shares resources for knitters of all skill levels. She learned to knit in 2004 and has since developed a growing portfolio of accessory designs—including hats, scarves, wraps, and blankets—many of which are freely available online.

Driven by a passion for regional textile heritage, Kara aims to connect her patterns with the fibers, history, and landscapes of Rhode Island and New England. Kara’s designs focus on approachable techniques, thoughtful construction, and practical pieces that knitters will actually wear and use.

As an avid explorer of the local wools (and other fibers) found across New England, she finds constant inspiration in the region’s natural resources, experimenting with every local fiber she can get her hands on. Kara has degrees in History and Public Administration and works in public policy. She was recently appointed to the RI State Council on the Arts and is excited to support the arts and creative sector in Rhode Island. Kara lives and works in Pawtuxet Village in Rhode Island, with her dog Theodorable.
