I’m Cheryl Desjardin, a natural dyer / fiber artist / sewist / maker. Influenced by material and colors found in nature I create one-of-a-kind, eco-conscious, hand-dyed and hand-sewn botanical bags and wearables. I use all natural materials: plants, flowers, leaves, bark and nuts (some of which I respectfully forage and gather myself, and some I purchase from eco-conscious purveyors) — plus I use some food waste. I then apply formulas and techniques inspired by traditional methods used for hundreds, and sometimes, thousands of years, such as Shibori, Dyeing and Botanical Imprinting and Hand Stamping and Painting on cotton, silk and linen.
As a classically trained graphic designer and painter, I hope my work challenges the perceived distinctions between art, craft and design, as well as the idea that textile craft has been traditionally undervalued, being deemed a domestic craft unworthy of serious consideration.
I learned to sew from my Mother and from public school home economics class (my Mother and I had the same sewing teacher!) I’m grateful for both of these women and their teachings. Combining my love of natural dyeing with sewing is the ultimate joy for me and sharing this joy through my carefully crafted, environmentally friendly pieces is the icing on the cake.
Some of my carefully-crafted creations are Japanese-inspired Komebukuro bags, cross-body bags, wristlets, wallets, small zippered bags and wine gift bags and wearables, often from upcycled clothing.
I’ve recently started teaching workshops and love sharing the knowledge and skills I’ve developed and exchanging ideas with participants.
My work is unique, high quality, yet affordable for many. My process and dedication to using all natural botanically sourced dye materials is often a draw for those who are interested and concerned about our environment.
